Bears were confident of a comfortable victory in this fixture, as they had already notched up a 31 point win earlier in the season, and the visitors turned up with only 6 players, and were missing several key players. Things started according to plan, as Bears played great hustle D (led by George and Liam), and strolled into a 20-10 point lead after just 8 minutes. Then the Uni side suddenly found their game. A 10-0 made up of three quick three pointers and a free throw meant that the quarter ended all square.
The visitors continued well in the second, and started to open up a lead, but Bears closed strongly and finished the half a point up. In the third, the lead change several times, as Bears struggled to make any impression on the game. Fortunately, Marty Page stepped up to the plate in the the closing minutes and nailed back to back treys to put the home side up 56-53 going into the final period.
The 4th was a nervy affair, as neither side were able to establish any dominance. This played into Bears hands, as they managed to secure a 5 point lead with just 1.5 minutes remaining. The students tried in vain to get back into it, as Bears held on for a 2 point win.
Not a great display, marred at times by over-complacency. Bears will have to pull up their socks if they expect to get anything out of the return fixture on Thursday night!
